Finding reliable outsourced development services shouldn’t be difficult. But in a four year span of time while working on software development in New York, the founders of Morpho encountered every outsourcing cliche imaginable. We worked with nearly a dozen outsourcing firms and consistently ran into the same problems.

• We were assured we’d be buying developers who followed modern coding practices, only to find our code riddled with table-based layouts inline styles (or font tags, or worse), inaccessibility, PHP that wasn’t OO, etc.
• We’d be assured our account managers would be responsive and reliable, but were neither. Problems weren’t solved in a timely manner, partially because our account managers didn’t know the first thing about development work.
• The promise of the 24 hour work day quickly evaporated as communication problems left us continually having to re-do work. With no one to talk to when we were working and no one for them to talk to when they were working, it turned out to be more frustration than blessing.

And then everything changed.

And then we stumbled upon a couple of guys in New York who were starting a company outsourcing developers from Latin America. After being burned multiple times before we were hesitant, but we were pleasantly surprised to find the relationship unlike any other than we had before.

Our account manager was technically savvy enough to talk about the intricacies of our projects. Our developers actually knew standards-based markup, agile development methodologies and more. They were in the same time zone, and communicated with us via Google Talk and Campfire. And they were just as inexpensive as their Eastern counterparts.

We had seen the future of outsourcing for web development, and it was good. We made a proposal to form a new company with the Latin American firm, and the rest was history.
